Question Workpermit

Hi there my name is Beverley from South Africa. My husband and i plan to travel to Auckland on Visitors Visas in September 2008 with the hope of looking for suitable employment at the same time. I am a secretary by profession and my husband is working in a call center. Both my parents have PR in NZ as well as my sister and her family. From what I understand i need a job that offers me NZ$30 000 pa in order to apply for residence as my sister will be our sponsor. Can anyone please tell me if i will have difficulty finding a job as a secretary in Auckland given the fact that I only have what we call matric (grade 12) and a secretarial certificate with 15 years working experience on an executive level. I really want to move closer to my parents and my sister as they the only family support that we have, but at the same time i really need to know that i wont have difficulty in obtaining a workpermit for the type of work that i do. Please advise anyone as i'm planning to resign my job in July.

Hi Beverley.

Welcome to the forum. Don't know much about secretary work or Auckland for that matter but wanted to Welcome you.

I'm not sure that you actually have to have a job offer for your family to sponsor you for residency but i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong. You will have to pass the police and medical checks and think your sponsor would have to have police checks too- oh and they have to have held PR for 3 years to sponsor you.

Hi Beverley and Welcome to our Mad House

I can't help you much with the PR / Work Permit side of things, but I used to do secretarial work when I lived in Auckland. It was a few years ago now but I understand secretarial work in Auckland now pays on average NZD50,000 and EA (Executive Assistant) approximately NZD60,000, so I would think with your experience, you could easily expect to exceed your NZD30,000 and probably a bit more. Have you tried this website for jobs?

Have you looked at the NZ Immigration site? There's also contact details there - you could contact them if its not clear on the site what the requirements are for the work permit.
