change from WHV to work permit

Hi,

I'm on a two year WHV (from UK) and my current employer wants to give me a work permit so I can stay in my job more than 3 months (they are very official and wont do anything against immigrations regulations). I was wondering, if I get a work permit and then decide not to stay in my job, will my WHV still be active (assuming it is less than two years from when I entered NZ). I'd like to stay in my job but I'm worried about being tied to it, as I might want to do some more backpacking/casual jobs in the future. Hope someone can help,
