    Question Student Visa/Work Visa

So my partner of three years is planning to go to New Zealand to do his PhD and I would of course like to go with him as we've been living together since 2008 (and can provide proof). Do I need to do an EOI and all that jazz to join him, or is there a way to "piggy back" on his student visa? I would need to work while we're there, but my work isn't on the shortage lists so I'm concerned that without a job offer when we intend to leave, I wouldn't have enough points on my own to get the migrant work permit.

Anyone know anything about this? :)

    Hi,

You could be eligible for a partner of a student open work visa. This visa is linked to the length of the student visa, doesn't require an EOI etc, and allows you to work for any employer.

Thanks! Looks like it shouldn't be too difficult. I guess my only other question now is how easy will it be for my 8 year old daughter to come as well? Will she need a student visa as well, etc.?

I'm not sure how it works with students sponsoring children, but I would think it's the same deal. Your daughter would need a student visa though. Just be aware that you will need to pay international school fees for your daughter too.

Looking down this page, towards the bottom, you'll see....

    Partners and children of students
If your partner or children want to come to New Zealand with you, they will need to apply for a visitor visa or, if they will also be studying, their own student visa.
