    Default Work Permit

I am hoping someone can give me some advice.

I am here on a working holiday visa and I have managed to get a permanent job. I am working as an Insolvency Officer for the government. I have had a look at what options are available and unfortunately it doesn't look like I would be able to use my job as leverage for a work permit / visa because it is not on the skills shortage list. I have not got this job through any particular qualification but through experience I have gained throughout my working career so therefore, under the essential skills category I would also be struggling. I have looked into permanent residency too but I don't think I will score high enough on the EOI!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Marc,

If you feel you wouldn't be able to get a work permit from your job skills, you certainly wouldn't be able to apply under the Skilled Migrant Category because the criteria for that is even stricker. I wonder if the fact that you are working for the government would qualify you to apply for a Work to Residence visa if it can be shown they are an accredited employer under the Talent Policy. Looking through this link there are quite a few government departments included in the list so you may be lucky. There are some other issues to overcome e.g. salary must be a minimum of $55,000/annum and you need to be suitably qualified. I'm not sure if experience counts as being suitably qualified in this case, but it could be a way forward for you. Try asking your employers if they are accredited for NZ immigration.
