Boy racer crackdown this weekend

Christchurch police are planning a targeted operation as the first weekend of new boy racer laws gets underway.

The legislation, which came into effect on Tuesday, allows for boy racers' cars to be crushed on the third offence.

Moteliers along Christchurch's Bealey Ave, a favourite spot with boy racers, hope the laws will make a difference, but are not convinced they will.

One says he is not sure police have the resources to tackle the problem but is welcoming news of the weekend crack-down.

He believes things have already improved a little lately, but he still gets complaints from overseas guests who say such boy racer behaviour would never be tolerated in their countries.
