    Default Tsunami warning

    Powerful quake off Samoa islands

A powerful earthquake has struck near the Samoa islands, triggering a tsunami warning for several Pacific nations.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit at 1748 GMT at a depth of 33km (20.5 miles).

Its epicentre was about 190km south-west of Apia on the island of Samoa, the US Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Samoa islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and other Pacific islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

The Samoa islands comprise two separate entities - the nation of Samoa and American Samoa, a US territory - with a total population of about 250,000 people.

Is there much of a history of NZ being hit by tsunami's ? we are still in UK but must admit to living on the coast, motueka if possible, even have our eye on a coastal property on the internet at the moment. This had crossed our minds, having almost being in Phuket when the Tsunami stuck. Any info would be welcome/
    Thanks.

This site gives a good explanation of the risk of tsunami in New Zealand:
Tsunamis - Tsunamis ? New Zealand?s underrated hazard - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
It follows on these pages with a history of NZ tsunami:
Tsunamis - New Zealand?s tsunami history - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
Tsunamis - 20th-century tsunamis - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
A summary would be that NZ has a lot of coastline and is in the Pacific so is therefore is at risk of tsunami, but as with earthquakes, the frequency of damaging ones is not high.
For earthquakes, we build appropriately and (some people) prepare survival kits, (http://www.civildefence.govt.nz/memwebsite.nsf/Files/CDHouseholdPlan07/$file/CDHouseholdPlan07.pdf) and hope not to need them.

For tsunami, there is less that can be done with building design, but there is usually some warning time, from minutes to hours depending on the location of the quake.
You can choose to live on higher land, but the beach is very tempting for many.

When an earthquake or tsunami hits, remember you could be at work or at home or elsewhere. See this current ad campaign:

I think New Zealanders are very aware of the potential for these and other disasters, but a bit blasť about whether they will be affected.
Flooding, landslips, strong winds and volcanic eruptions are other potential disasters.
