Default Jobs summit throws up three big ideas

Jobs summit throws up three big ideas

    By Audrey Young

A national campaign to save or create thousands of jobs and stabilise shaky businesses will hinge on three main ideas from yesterday's Jobs Summit.

A nine-day working fortnight, an investment fund worth hundreds of millions of dollars and - the surprise item - a cycleway the length of New Zealand are among the few specific ideas to emerge in a 21-point plan to counter the ailing economy.

Prime Minister John Key will give priority to working on taxpayer-paid training subsidies for businesses that cut a working fortnight to nine days, with nine days' pay.

But he has ruled out the Government entirely paying the wages for the tenth day, saying: "I think it wouldn't be possible to fund it 100 per cent."

The Government was more likely to pay for training than wage replacement.

9-day work plan tipped to begin this month
    4:00AM Tuesday Mar 10, 2009
    By Claire Trevett

A nine-day working fortnight is likely to be a reality by the end of the month for workplaces trying to stop lay-offs, and the Government is expected to offer an allowance equivalent to the minimum wage for the tenth day.

After a spate of redundancies over the past fortnight, the Government is moving quickly on its plans for the initiative which was one of the key ideas to emerge from the Job Summit.

The Cabinet is understood to have considered a minimum wage level allowance to cover wages on the tenth day yesterday.

Prime Minister John Key said he expected to make an announcement on the scheme this week and an allowance was "possible".

It will be the first initiative from the Job Summit to result in concrete action.

9-day fortnight saves first jobs [Other companies considering nine-day plan says Key]
    4:00AM Thursday Mar 26, 2009

Fisher & Paykel Appliances is introducing a 35-hour working week in a bid to save about 60 jobs.

The company said yesterday that the move had been negotiated with its Auckland refrigeration assembly workforce and the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU).

The arrangement would run for six months from April to September, and prevent what would have been about 60 redundancies, the company said.

Under the agreement, the 35-hour work week will be supplemented with an additional 3.5 hours' pay, made up from the Government's nine-day working fortnight scheme and an equivalent company contribution.
