What a surprise! I bet it's all our lot who have gone down there recently.

Chch now NZ's second most populated city
Thursday, 13 November 2008

The South Island's Garden City has outstripped the capital in population growth and is now the nation's second biggest city.

Statistics New Zealand figures show Christchurch has a population of 382,200, 300 more than Wellington.

But though Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is cock-a-hoop over his city's promotion from trailing a long way behind Auckland and Wellington for decades, the statisticians say he should make the most of it.

Demographic projections show Christchurch races relegation in the next couple of years, with Manukau City powering into second place by 2011.

Over the longer term, the Auckland region will account for 62 per cent of the nation's population growth over the 25 years to 2031, adding 560,000 people to reach 1.93 million. The next highest population rises are expected to be seen in the Canterbury regions (101,000 more people), Waikato (64,000 more people), Wellington (63,000) and Bay of Plenty (61,000).
