The population of New Zealand has grown by more than 40,000 people in the past year.

The estimated resident population was 4.28 million at the end of September this year, up by just over 43,000 on the previous year.

Statistics New Zealand says the main contribution came from an increase in births over deaths, although permanent and long term arrivals also exceeded departures by nearly 4,500.

The median age for males is 35.4 years and 37.2 years for the female population.
