Default Compulsory history class proposed for migrants

It does say 'citizens' and not 'residents'.

Compulsory history class proposed for migrants
By TIM DONOGHUE - The Dominion Post | Wednesday, 22 October 2008

The Maori Party wants new immigrants to undertake a course on New Zealand and Pacific history before being granted citizenship.

Unveiling the party's Treaty of Waitangi policy in Christchurch today, Te Tai Tonga candidate Rahui Katene said for the country to compete globally it was important all new citizens shared an understanding of New Zealand and Pacific history.

A spokesman for Immigration Minister Clayton Cosgrove said educational packs on Treaty of Waitangi issues were made available to all new immigrants arriving in New Zealand.

However, the Maori Party wanted to formalise the process further by requiring new immigrants to undertake formal courses on the history of Aotearoa and the Pacific.

    From here.

I'm surprised a knowledge of NZ history isn't required yet for citizenship. ...Or are they talking about pre-pakeha Polynesian history only? I would support requiring a comprehensive history.

Hopefully it's already taught to the kiwi-born, but one can't tell nowadays.

This is Maori trying to influence immigrants (new voters) with their importance. This would be from a Maori point of view I am betting.
