Default Carbon law drives petrol up 7c

Carbon law drives petrol up 7c

Motorists face a probable 7c-a-litre price rise at the pump from 2011 when costs of the Emissions Trading Scheme are passed on, according to Government estimates based on projected carbon prices.

The Government's flagship climate change legislation passed into law last night by 63 votes to 57.

The trucking industry estimates fuel bills will climb close to $100 million a year, while airlines' voluntary carbon offset charges, now around $2.30 for a main trunk one-way domestic flight, are a clue to what will become compulsory.

Backers of the scheme point out this is relatively modest compared with the price swings which saw the pump price of 91-octane petrol leap from around $1.60 a litre in September last year to more than $2.10 in July, to less than $2 now.

Economic uncertainty and soaring world prices for oil driven by supply fears and market traders led the Government to put off for two years the inclusion of fuel in the scheme, in spite of Green Party objections.

Prime Minister Helen Clark is going to make NZ environmentally friendly if it breaks everyone here.

    AA praises fuel price drops
    Updated 1:59PM Wednesday Sep 17, 2008

The Automobile Association is praising the oil companies for dropping fuel prices this afternoon.

Shell, Gull, BP and Caltex have dropped the price of diesel and petrol as the price of crude oil continues to fall.

AA spokesman Mike Noon said "good on them". He said the fall in the New Zealand dollar was off-setting the fall in the price of crude but over the last two days the climate had shifted in favour of a fuel price drop.

"The AA is very pleased to see the oil companies responding so quickly and they are to be congratulated," Mr Noon said.

He said the AA thought conditions were right for a drop in diesel later this week so the drop today was welcome.

Shell's unleaded 91 has dropped by 4 cents to 195.9 cents while diesel is down six cents to 153.9.

Hoping that everything will be back in normal. We knew that we are greatly affected whenever the price of crude oil increases.

Cheap oil is gone. There is a temporary reduction in demand because of the current financial crisis. Oil WILL go to $200 a barrel but it will be a slower climb. You are living in fantasy land if you think oil prices will come down in the long run.
