Net migration to slow

Annual net migration to New Zealand is expected to slow to 3000, but avoid a net outflow, remaining low enough to keep some pressure off the Reserve Bank, Westpac economists said yesterday.

Last year's fall in net migration probably removed the need for one central bank interest rate rise, as New Zealanders left in droves for Australia, Westpac chief economist Brendan O'Donovan said.

"Monthly figures show that the outflow to Australia has stabilised while arrivals from other countries are picking up," he said.
