Auckland road tolls plan abandoned
NZPA | Thursday, 5 April 2007

Road tolls to pay for a key new motorway in Auckland are off the agenda after overwhelming public opposition.

Transit New Zealand yesterday said opposition to tolls as a way to speed up construction of Auckland's western ring route motorway, an alternative to State Highway 1, was too great for it to continue with the idea.

Transit chief executive Rick van Barneveld said more than 21,500 submissions were received and there was a strong preference in the submissions to find other ways of funding the road.

"We understand the Government is currently reviewing other potential funding policy options for Auckland transport solutions," Mr van Barneveld said.

"We were quite genuinely committed to meaningful engagement with the community on our toll concept for the western ring route and we value the significant level of public and stakeholder involvement in the consultation."
