'Driver reviver' rest stops to cut accidents at Easter
NZPA | Wednesday, 4 April 2007

In a bid to stop crashes caused by drivers getting tired on their way home from the Easter break, an insurance company has hooked up with ACC to get people to stop and take a rest.

State Insurance and ACC will have "Driver Reviver" rest stops operating at Ruakaka in Northland, Bulls in the Manawatu and Lewis Pass in the Southern Alps, providing coffee, muffins and entertainment for children.

Ministry of Transport figures showed in 2005, 651 crashes were caused by driver fatigue, including 50 fatalities.

Between 2000 and 2005, fatigue-related crashes increased by 40 per cent.

The rest stops will open on Easter Monday at 10am in Bulls and Ruakaka and 9am in Lewis Pass.
