Thumbs up Daylight saving starts this weekend

    Daylight saving starts this weekend
    3:43 PM Monday Sep 20, 2010

New Zealanders will soon be able to say goodbye to dark, wintry evenings spent huddled at home now that daylight savings is fast approaching.

The Department of Internal Affairs is reminding people to put their clocks forward an hour when daylight savings kicks in this Sunday at 2am.

It suggests people put their clocks forward before going to bed on Saturday to avoid any inconvenience.

The extra hour of daylight in the evenings runs until Sunday, April 3.

The department also says daylight savings is an "opportune time" for people to check their household emergency plans, survival kits and smoke alarms.

New Zealand moved to an extended period of daylight savings in 2007.

Just when I was enjoying the sunlight when getting up at 6am, time changes and it'll be dark when I get up again...

Sunsmart warning as daylight saving starts
    3:06 PM Saturday Sep 25, 2010

New Zealanders are warned not to underestimate the power of the sun as they use their extra time outside following the start of daylight saving tomorrow.

The Department of Internal Affairs is reminding people to put their clocks forward an hour when daylight saving begins at 2am. The extra hour of daylight in the evenings runs until Sunday, April 3.

Despite distinctly unsummery temperatures, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) levels are already rising, said Wayde Beckman of SunSmart.

"After a long, cold and pretty wet winter it's tempting, with the start of daylight saving, to get out and spend more time in the sun.

"But spring can be deceptive, with temperatures still quite low in some places, but UVR levels are already high enough to cause sunburn if we don't take care," Mr Beckman said.
