Severe weather lashes North, spreads South

Severe weather warnings are in place across the country for heavy rains and gales lashing the upper North Island and expected to extend to the South Island today.

Metservice has issued specific warnings for eastern Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Nelson west of Motueka, Canterbury south of the Waimakariri River, north Otago and Dunedin (details listed below).

At 8.30am additional warnings were issued for Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa, where heavy rain is expected to hit tonight and into Tuesday.

Rain fall could reach more than 200mm in parts of the South Island and winds of up to 90km/h are expected to lash the North Island from Auckland to Kapiti. Severe gusts were forecast for Taranaki and Manawatu.
