Coolest May since 1992
7:00AM Monday June 02, 2008

New Zealand moved from summer to winter abruptly in May, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research's latest climate statistics.

The national average temperature for the month was 9.6C - 1.1C below average and almost 4C cooler than the balmy month of April. It was the coolest May since 1992.

Of the five main centres, Auckland was the warmest and wettest. Hamilton was by far the sunniest , and Christchurch the driest and coldest.

Cold? They don't know the meaning of the word! Hamilton has been fab, bit chilly in the mornings and evenings but all through the day it's been quite pleasant.

Thats to be expected though, Hamilton is the best city in NZ

We can't complain at the Kapiti Coast either. Yes, the nights are quite chilly, but the days usually beautiful and warm (unless we have a southerly breeze coming in) - most of the days I am still jogging bare feet and in shorts/t-shirt at the beach.

Molly you need get out a bit earlier to get a taste of the cold. I walkin QE park every morning about 6:30am. There has been a frost the past few days on the rural tract, No frost on the beach side.

If you keep moving it is not too bad after the sun comes up.

Goodness me, no thanks. That would be way too early. 6.30 am is "first/second coffee and checking email time". However, I imagine it must be very beautiful to be in the QE park and seeing the sunrise.
