Kiwi women most promiscuous in the world

Kiwi women are the most promiscuous in the world ? right up there with Austrian blokes, a survey says.

New Zealand women have an average of 20.4 sexual partners, according to a survey by condom-maker Durex.

The global average was 7.3.

Austrian men were sharing the love most (29.3 sexual partners), while Kiwi blokes were 11th down the men's list with an average of 16.8 ? higher than the global average of 13.2.

The Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global survey was compiled by the condom maker after questioning 26,000 people in 26 countries, including New Zealand.

New Zealand was also unusual for being the only country where women have more sexual partners than their men.

However, no matter the number of notches on the bedpost, there is a safe-sex message behind the results.

Family Planning Association chief executive Jackie Edmond said release of the survey was an opportunity to remind people to take care with both physical and mental health as part of a healthy sex life.

"Consistent and competent use of condoms is key to lowering transmission of and infection with STIs (sexually transmitted infections)," she said.

"Young people need strategies to decide if and when to be sexually active.

"They need to negotiate condom use with their partners and make good decisions about their sexual health including regular sexual health checks at facilities such as Family Planning Association clinics."

Other aspects of the survey have been released throughout the year putting New Zealand teenagers among the youngest in the world to lose their virginity.

Austrians were the youngest to lose their virginity at 17.3 years, followed by Brazilians (17.4), Germans (17.6) and New Zealanders (17.8).

It also showed our countrymen and women were getting plenty of sex, but not really enjoying it.

New Zealanders have sex an average 122 times a year. This outperforms Australians, who have sex 106 times a year.

But less than half (43 per cent) of New Zealanders are fully satisfied with their sex lives.

That was way behind Nigeria, the most sexually satisfied nation, where 67 per cent were content.

Japan was the least satisfied nation, with just 15 per cent being fully satisfied with their sex lives.

Durex spokeswoman Kristie Penwarden said the results would be used by the condom makers to identify inhibitions and pressures in the bedroom.

She said it showed sexual priorities had changed for men and women.

A devil-may-care attitude among young people is behind Kiwi women's newly acquired reputation for being the most promiscuous in the world, believes Auckland psychologist Sara Chatwin.

"Eighteen to 25-year-olds don't adhere to such a strict code of ethics with regard to random sexual exploits," Chatwin said.

She was commenting on the results of the Durex sexual wellbeing global survey which showed Kiwi women were the most wanton in the world, having an average of 20.4 sexual partners. The global average was 7.3.

Kiwi men have an average of 16.8 partners, making our blokes the 11th randiest in the world.

The survey questioned 26,000 people in 26 countries about their sex lives. People were invited to take part in the survey through a random email invitation.

Christchurch-raised Coralie Robinson, who's now a UK tabloid regular, is not shy about her romantic exploits with many men, including cricketer Shane Warne and singer Robbie Williams. She's said: "Yeah, I do like sex way more than everyone else, and I do have a lot more sex than anyone else I know."

Chatwin said while the methodology used may have skewed the results, attitudes towards sex had changed, particularly among the younger generation.

"The boundaries seem to have loosened. I don't think that is a good thing."

Our women damaged, not promiscuous

Now that we've had a good snigger at the Durex survey which purported to show New Zealand women are the "most promiscuous in the world", with an average of 20.4 sexual partners, can we put aside the jokes and think about why this might be?

Could it possibly be connected with another international survey, out this week from the World Health Organisation, showing New Zealand girls are more likely to be sexually abused than females from all the other 11 developed countries surveyed?

This shameful revelation, coming as it does on top of facts showing New Zealanders care little for the wellbeing of children - physical abuse, unwanted teenage pregnancies, abortion statistics - is no surprise to anyone who, in the last few decades, has had anything to do with the sexual abuse of children.

But this is a subject we don't talk about. It happens in our own homes, next door, at school, at friends' homes, but we turn away and change the subject. We'd rather fuss about false accusations of sexual abuse (which do happen, albeit rarely), and make national heroes of those who publicly campaign for acquittal.
