Default A Nerd Question

Ahhh, thats eeeaaaasyyyyy!!

Firstly, your PHP page needs to receive all the posted elements and store them in variables. For each posted element, you need:

[code:1:5c132f417f]$variablename = $_POST['postedname'];
$variable2 = $_POST['postedname2'];
[/code:1:5c132f417f]

And so on. This may not be necassary, depending on how your PHP is configured, but is good practise anyway! Then, in the body of the page, you use the PHP variables to place the text as you want it:

[code:1:5c132f417f]Dear <?=$variable1?>,

It has come to my attention that you <?=$variable2?>, so I would like to take this opportunity to <?=$variable3?>.

[/code:1:5c132f417f]

Of course, give the variables meaningful names, so you know where to place them on the page!!

If you want to give me a list of all the form elements, i'll write the page for you if you want.

I know Taffy will disagree, but he's wrong so it doesn't matter. :icon_biggrin: but I'd reccomend getting MS Visual Studio.NET and creating ASP.NET applications in C#.NET, VB.NET if you like others to chew your food for you.
That way you will almost exclusively write only C type syntax code and any javascript :icon_neutral: you need can be included in object attributes, or for inline commands to execute immeadiatley with the Response.Write method.
All you need is IIS on your server and Robert's your mothers brother.

This is all bollocks if you are a Unix nut, but if you are you wouldn't asking tech questions here.

No that's because he's a Unix type, the type that believes a car should have a single red light on the dashboard and nothing else, because if somethings wrong you should know what it is.

If you don't know how to do it teach, if you can't teach write Unix help files.

Default A Nerd Question

Whats all this?

Ignore Glen, he's not a real programmer. He relies on the 'Autocomplete' in VS to finish all his code for him :icon_lol: He also needs 600mb worth of ".NET Framework" to make the code any use!

Don't you know that PHP is also a windows platform Glen? Yes, the dreaded interpreter works with shonky old IIS!! PHP has a very close relationship with C++, arguably one of the most powerful languages in the world.

MoveToNZ started off as an ASP website, I cut my teeth on ASP but IIS is such a poor, unstable platform that the website was down, more often than not (only the ASP pages, the HTML ones still worked!). Hence the switch to PHP on Linux servers. After all, the internet is based on Unix, without which there would never have been the internet we know today, and you simply cant fault Linux/Unix for reliability.

Windows, and anything on it, are memory hogging security risks from hell! Even Apple Macs use OSX, yes, LINUX! And you don't get better than those for DTP and graphical design etc.

Windows is a toy, made easy for the masses, and suffers the consequence of viruses, unreliablility (yes, windows like to 'freeze'!) and a worldwide hate campaign comprising millions of people.

If Linux had Adobe photoshop, I would never use windows again! I know I could run it under Wine, but it doesnt work that well :icon_frown:

And how about a little cost comparison, just to round this off:

All prices in USD

WINDOWS:
Windows 2003 Server : $999
Server Anti Virus & Firewall : $100 up to Many Thousands
Damage caused by viruses : $Billions

LINUX:
Linux Operating System : FREE
Anti Virus & Firewall : FREE up to a few dollars
Damage caused by viruses : Bugger all!

This is an excellent article, that EVERYONE should read:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10...ndows_viruses/

If all you use windows for is checking emails, web surfing, chatting on MSN and typing the occasional document, get yourself LINUX! All of these things are on Linux (Even an MSN chat, called Gaim) so get it and you'll be set :icon_biggrin:

How much did it cost again? Oh yes.. NOTHING!

Default A Nerd Question

I'm finding it very difficult to defend myself as I also program in ANSI C for real-time systems, in VXWorks on Unix. making robots work.

But here goes:

To produce good software, efficiently and quickly VS cannot be touched, .NET's managed code with it's superb garbage collection means you make something, use it then forget it. No memory leaks, well this is not true you get loads of memory leaks, but the GC sorts then out if it has too. Please don't say Java has all this, anyone who likes a language so analy retentive it enforces its string type as being a reference type instead using static constructors to enable it mimic a data type has real problems.

To produce real-time software, that is so good and efficient that you have to make it sleep for over 98% of the time, you use Unix and only Unix. I don't think there are many OO autopilots.

But don't expect me to ever agree with Taffy. :icon_wink:

I can't get on with Java. Even if it is the alleged 'web language of the future' (apart from XML I guess)!

There's only one problem with RAD systems, if there is a bug in THEIR code, there's nothing you can do about it! You've made up for your VS rapid applications by being a C and Perl programmer anyway, Glen. So, on this occasion, I have decided to allow you to remain a member of this forum :icon_lol:

Hell, I might even give you a job in my empire one day! (One day being when I've managed to create said empire)
