Lauren's prom!! OMG I can't be that old!

KH and Selchie, the prom thing is relatively new here probably really only within the last 10 years or so, obviously another US import. And yeah they do have them in NZ - Lauren has been chatting to a few people who have already had theirs.
It was fantastic to see them all, they all looked stunning including the boys. We had a party the night after at our house for Lauren to say goodbye to her friends. There must have been 30 young people no older than 18 in our house all night and I can honestly say it was some of the best company we've had in a long time. They were well-mannered, respectful, polite and entertaining. We went to bed as the sun came up and they all crashed wherever they could find a space. Three of my favourite boys cooked breakfast for everyone at about 9.30 and most of them hung around long enough to help me clean up and take out the rubbish.
Now don't be thinking I was just lucky coz Laurens friends must come from decent families. A lot of these kids are off the local estate and think Lauren's way out of their league but they've all said that because they felt trusted in my house and because they were treated with respect it was natural for them to behave likewise and up their game. Young people are given a hard time and all you have to do is get to know them. They are my friends as well as her and I will miss them just about as much as she will.

Well, Dawn's probably got a sensible head on her shoulders like her mother and knows better than to hang out with the wrong crowd--or at least to bring the wrong crowd home!

You know what I meant! I mean, everyone knows I was just being nice and Lauren's the sensible one in the family.

BTW, how's the packing going? I'm going crazy here, trying to figure out how to get 2 opposite seasons' worth of clothes into a reasonable number of bags.

Yeah tough one this we're just packing anything and everything. Have chucked loads of stuff out. Just layer up your clothes KH, don't worry about the season thing, loadsof layers over one another works better probably than a couple of thickies.
Had an email from our friend in Tuakau today she said Auckland is wet and cool, it has been down around 0 but today is 16! So not much of a difference there - the layers certainly seems a good idea eh?

Lovely pics Dawn, your Lauren looks very grown up and beautiful, (mama too!).... I didn't do a prom, the word wasn't even mentioned at my school or anyone else's at that time, (not too long ago).
She must have felt a bit sad too leaving her friends behind, (or maybe they feel worse?!)

It is an emotional time for her just now Deb. She has found her way into a lot of peoples hearts. She has been very upset over the last few weeks and so have her friends but she's coming on to an even keel now. She's smiling goodbye instead of weeping it

It was our leaving party seeing friends cry that got me, I was actually quite surprised by some people..... it IS a strange time for you all!
