Default A bit of British pride

Interesting info on the Red Arrows site, MB. Those pilots have got to be hot potatoes to do the stuff they do.

The Blue Angels aren't supposed to fly through the 'canyons' but they have. They also do a lot of buzzing over the City. I'm not sure if there's been enough recent complaining that they have stopped. But my OH said that when she worked in the Financial District, she once got to look down into the cockpit of one.

I got buzzed while on a desert ridge once, on a geology field trip. There was an Air Force base nearby, and they trained in the area. I didn't hear the jet until it was over me (about 50 feet up!!). Thank goodness I didn't wet myself.

It's the bit about them flying 6ft. apart that got my knees knocking. They did this right in front of us, coming from opposite directions and passing each other on their sides, 'belly' to 'belly'. They looked very close, but I thought it was just an optical illusion. Realised when I read the write-up that that must have been a 6ft. moment. The draught from their passing so close to us pushed me backwards and I lost vital viewing moments trying to maintain my balance on the wall I was perched on.

Your Blue Angels don't sound quite so angelic if they're joy riding around the cities.

Default A second dose

Weren't really expecting to see the Red Arrows back here again so soon, so it was a pleasant surprise to see they were coming to do a display for our National Day. We should have had a public holiday both for National Day and the Sultan's birthday, which was yesterday but the Sultan decreed that the holiday will now be next week instead. I was quite narked as it meant I wouldn't get to see the show.

However, as luck would have it, hubster managed to get off work early and came to pick me up. Traffic was so bad we nearly missed the show and we couldn't park up, as the traffic was gridlocked so I took these pics from inside the car some distance back from the beach, otherwise the pics would have been a bit more dramatic as the planes seemed to be very close in. It was very difficult to catch some of the shots because, with buildings on either side of me, I couldn't see when the planes were coming or where they were coming from. Some of my pics just ended up with puffs of vapour on them.

Thanks, Beth. One could do oneself a mischief trying to catch these planes on camera as they move so darned fast. I was disappointed I couldn't get to the beach to see them properly but everywhere was jammed full of cars as everyone (who should have been in work) flocked to see the show.

I bet the olympic organisers won't take any notice of their popularity though!
