    Default Banking

Hi all, We are very confused... so many different accounts and so many different charges. Obviously we are not used to paying charges for our banking as we are from the UK. Does anyone have any advice of which bank/account to choose - we are looking for an account that is similar to our uk current account.

We have just asked our currency provider to press the button at $3 to the pound (missed this price yesterday!) so we need to open an account asap.

    Thanks in advance

Everything you need to know is online at the bank sites: kiwibank, wetpac, bnz, psis, anz, and national.

We went with ASB as it seemed to offer something similar to our current account back in the UK. We chose to opt in to the statement stopper and now only get our statements online and so don't pay any monthly charges. I think we would get charged if we actually went into the bank and tried to use an over-the-counter service but we get around this by moving our money about online and by using the quick-deposit-box in the bank. We also don't use cheques as I have feeling they might also be chargable, but with a card and ATM's everywhere we don't really ever have the need for a chequebook (and the odd time we would use one it's probably better to pay the one-off charge than the monthly fee).

I guess it all depends what you want from your account. I am sure when we were looking into it I stumbled across a comparison table of all the banks, charges and what was included to help make it easy to choose. There was one other bank at the time that also offered the same as ASB (think it was WESTPAC but could be wrong) and we ended up going with ASB simply because we didn't need to provide proof of address or IRD number, which at the time we didn't have.
Arrived in New Zealand on WHV on 5th Feb '08.
