    Default Challenges W/o Job Offers?

    Dear All,
I am having butterflies in my stomach when thinking about the challenges one would have to face when "Arriving in NZ w/o a job offer" , and i feel so b'cos i haven't got one yet.
I have done my research though , as i already lived and worked in NZ for 1 year, but then i had a temporary job offer than.

Can someone tell what challenges one might face , concerning finding a temporary rental, job -hunting , transport, What/how much money one should carry with initially etc?
Does anyone know how long it takes to find a job in IT/software jobs etc?

There would be many thinking the same who have applied w/o a J.O ?
Hope one's gets Visas/PR's w/o J.O esle all the thinking would go in vain

    Any help ll be appreciated?
    Cheers!!

    Hi Damy,

The minimum recommended amount of money you should have to keep yourself is about NZ$1000 per month. IT skills are in demand in NZ so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job, especially in the cities. If you are there in person, employers will probably take you more seriously than someone who is applying from overseas.

Finding a rental shouldn't be too difficult either and, if you want to save money, you could share with someone which also means sharing costs. If you only want a temporary rental, just make sure you check how long the minimum rental period is for. You can always extend it after that. Public transport in the big cities is OK, but if you want to buy or rent a car to get about, that is possible, too. As you've already spent some time in NZ previously it shouldn't be too strange for you.

Thanks Damy. That's a very nice thing to say even if it isn't warranted.

I know exactly how you are feeling, as only 5 weeks ago I was in exactly the same position.

What I did was, a month before we flew to NZ, I bombarded recruitment agencies with emails, and kept a daily eye on the trademe site, for new jobs being advertised.

Even after all that, I only got 3 telephone interviews before we flew ... but from those I had appointments for 2 face-to-face interviews and was offered the first one! I also had plenty of interest from th recruitment agents - but they wanted to see me in person too.

Hope some of that re-assures you? What field of IT are you in, and do you know which part of NZ you wish to settle in?

    Default Thanks Lou.

    Dear Lou,

Thanks for the info. I think that must be a good move to book some face-to-face interviews before arrival. I have skills in C,unixshell scripts , PLSQL . I have worked for Banking and mostly Telecommunication business.
I too am in touch with the recruitment agents, but still they are adamant about me being physically present in nz. I can just hope for the best :)
    Cheers!!

    Hi!

We did it - took me about 4 weeks from first interviews to receiving a job offer (project management).

A friend arrived 2 weeks ago and secured a job offer 2 days ago (software developer)

I think costs depends on how many of you there are and where you'd be based. I'd say you need $1000 a week... for a family of 3 in Auckland.
