Question Move from Sydney to Hamilton NZ

Hi Guys,

I have been offered a permanent job in Hamilton, NZ and I wonder if anyone has had experience with moving from Australia to NZ. Does anyone know how long it takes until one gets ones stuff, what expenses I am looking at over and above a "door to door" service?

We have two cars, one small Renault Clio that is only 9 months old and a Ford Telstar TX5 in excellent conditions but build 1992. How much does it cost to put the car(s) on the NZ register?

Thanks
Mike

Can't help much with any of those questions but just wanted to welcome you to the forum.

I'm sure someone will be along with some helpful info soon.

The cars will have to go through compliance before you can register them, which costs around $350NZ I think (not including any repairs they ask for), then you have to pay for the registration of the vehicle, which is roughly another $240 including registration fees for 6 months or $340 for 12 months. After that you just pay normal rego fees and WOF's every 6 months.

I would say it's probably not worth bringing the Telstar as when you've added up shipping, compliance and registration, it may not be worth it. But, if it's a great reliable car and you love it, then it's really a matter of personal choice!! 1992 Telstars in NZ are worth roughly $3000 for a good example, if that helps.

Default Thanks for the info, Taffy

Hi Taffy,

Thanks for the info. That was very important since I can get for the TX5 in Australia in the current condition between $ AUS 5,000 - 6,000. Better to sell it here. I need to check out this "WOF" thing too. In New South Wales cars need an inspection only every 12 months and in most other States a roadworthiness inspection is needed only if one sells the car. What's the price of petrol in NZ these days?

Cheers
Mike

Ayup Spanner, how's it going? Hamilton is it then?? We're all pretty new here but if there's anything we can help you with let us know. Taf and WG have been here 3 years, they're the mammy and daddy. My partner, Gary and I and the kids have been here 9 months now - OMG can't believe it, it's gone so quickly.

Why not tune into the radio show 8pm Saturday night, don't know what time that is in Aussie, but you can chat to the rest of the gang, ask your questions, and get to know us a little better Ask Taf for instructions how to get into the radio oom coz, apparently, it's not working for some peeps.

We are currently paying £1.15 (at the cheaper end of the scale) per litre = NZD2.89 per litre. YOUR problem is???!!!

Our problem is we are earning NZ $'s! It'll be the equivalent of what it is in GBP before too long, and the comparable lower Kiwi wage will just make that pretty much unmanageable for most Kiwis
