I don't want to miss the opportunity so there has to be a way - it is just another hurdle to jump!

Kids are 9 & 5 so they will be going to school so they will need student visas unless we can get PR through in time.

EOI selected now so awaiting ITA.

Don't plan on any of this happening quickly - although if they know you have a job offer and the job is being held for you they might hurry things up a bit but they have to check that the job meets the criteria and that all the boxes have been ticked i.e. no resident kiwi can do the job, the job has been advertised for at least 3 months prior etc, etc.

You can get your work visa if you have a job offer and it's all been approved as above. Your family can accompany you on a work visa, your wife will be given a work visa as well if your application is successful but your kids can't study without a study permit and you have to have a work visa before you can apply for one of those unless your kids are being classed as international students which means they have to pay international fees.

We came out on VV's and applied for WV's once we were offered work. We were offered jobs within a few weeks, it still took 2 months for the WV's to come through and another 6 weeks for the study permits. We arrived in July and our kids didn't go to school until December. It didn't do any harm and they settled in really well but it was quite difficult keeping them occupied all that time without any friends around.

Good luck

hey guys!

you dont need a return ticket if your visa is for 12months or more..
the visa you get will have the condition:
outward passage waived on it which means that you dont have to physically hold a ticket back out but have to show (if requested) that you do hold sufficient funds for an outward ticket.
sufficient funds to them is the amount you paid for the ticket to come to nz and if that was purchased in a different currency then they will convert it with the exchange rate that is current on that day.

Hope this helps

cheers

and by the way, it doesnt help you to just hold a ticket to aus, as you dont hold a visa for australia which you even need if you just going there to holiday.

if they request a return ticket then that ticket has to take you to a country which you are legally allowed to stay in indefinately!
(usually the country your passport is from)

if you are not sure if you need an onward ticket then just check the conditions of your visa.
if it also says funds waived then that means you dont even have to show you have sufficient funds for an outward ticket

Default Update and more questions

Thanks for all this. I will hope to get the PR though but as I back up I am preparing to apply for a work visa. I have been told that this can happen quickly if you have a job offer - any experience?
Employer has sent all relevant documentation (they think) to immigration to hopefully speed things up but we will have to wait and see.

Talked to building soc yesterday and we have hopefully formed a plan to buy some time and release some equity to finance move in case house doesn't sell in time.

I need some good advice on pensions and the pros and cons of transferring to NZ. Does anyone know of any good advisors?

Getting quotes for removal/dogs/flights etc. What else have I forgotten to do at this stage? Aiming for 10 July departure!
