Well, it's bad news

The recruitment agent phoned this morning and said that it's a no "for now". He said that they'd like me to get in touch when I actually arrive in New Zealand, but for now, it' back to the drawing board

Well at least it wasn't all bad news if they want you to get in touch when you arrive in NZ and at least you got a free trip to Hamilton!

Good on you for being brave enough to come to the other side of the world for an interview - many wouldn't have had the courage, so give yourself a pat on the back

Commiserations Lou, but I wonder if what they're saying is that they can see potential in you, but maybe they're a bit worried about spending out more money shipping you and your stuff down there in case it doesn't work out. Perhaps they're hoping you'll work your own way down and they can spend more time re-assessing the situation instead of having packed everything into one short day and with you being a bit jet lagged.

There's obviously something there for them to come back and say that. They could have just said 'No, sorry, we're not interested'. Now, the problem is would you take the risk of shipping out in the hope that they'd come across with a job when you get there and can prove your abilities under more ideal circumstances. What you need to find out is 'Are they hoping for a second chance without the financial risks attached?'

I think, if it was me and the agent was approachable, I'd be asking the agent to find out what that comment about contacting them when you were in NZ meant and if there was really something behind it or was it them just paying you lip service. It could be that they want to try to fit you in somewhere, like with Neil but don't want to invest any more money - just in case.

Commiserations Lou, but as MB said - maybe they just weren't sure enough and did not want to spend more money getting you over to NZ. By getting there under your own steam you may be more attractive to them. I would contact the agent again and ask them to clarify the situation ie. 'Will there be a job if you move'.

At least you had a free 'fact finding' trip out of it

Speaking as the wisey old womany, you know that everything happens for a reason Maybe there's just this fabbo,astoundingly wonderous job just around the corner that has your name on it instead. Think positively baby, for every door that closes another opens, don't see it as an opportunity lost rather an opportunity gained. You did say that they had asked a few things of you that you weren't comfortable with, like going overseas remember? Maybe the universe knows you're not ready to shift that far out of your comfort zone just yet but it's arranging something else for you, just you wait and see.
