You are very lucky WG, because it hasn't made its way to the North Island yet. It has spread through quite a lot of SI rivers over the past couple of years or so. It's horrid stuff that clogs the river. It's like wet toilet tissue (there we go - back on the loo roll debate again!). YUUUCCCCKKKKKKK!

MAF will be interested in a jet ski because the didymo spores can live for ages and ages in a single drop of contaminated water. MAF's advice is to check (for obvious lumps and clumps), clean (with disinfectant or salt water) and dry to make sure all traces are killed off before you use the equipment again. It applies to kayaks, canoes, fishing gear, gum boots and anything else you might have used near fresh water rivers and lakes.

Didymo precautions are taken very seriously on the SI, although it hasn't stopped it spreading. During the Coast to Coast, we had to run through a disinfectant foot bath at Goat Pass to make sure we didn't transfer any nasty spores from river to river. And if you have a kayak or canoe on top of your car when you cross to the NI on the ferry, MAF stop you to check that you've cleaned it properly.
