Default NZ Furniture Store Websites?

Hiya,

Me again! Nearly bought a new sofa at the weekend to take with us to NZ .. before we take the plunge, was hoping to have a scout around and see what we can get once in NZ.

Anyone know of any websites showing NZ stock?

To give you an idea, the sofa was from Harveys in the UK .. hang on - will dig out a link-> Santiago :: Harveys Furniture and Furnishings

What do you think? Buy it here? Or wait?

Ta,

Lou
ps. Expect more daft posts as I will away the time it's taking NZIS to look at our EOI!!

Hi Lou,

Here's a few sites to look at, but online furniture ones are not always that brilliant. They look promising, but when you go into them they only have one or two items in each category. It's either that or nothing. Have a look through these. If nothing else, it'll give you some idea of price and the sort of thing that's available.

the difficulty I would think with buying here to take with you is how do you know that it will fit the house you will be moving into

Hey Jon and Lou,
I completely understand sofa thoughts, only something as drawn out as waiting for NZIS to reply would drive normal(?) sane folks to even consider exporting a sofa from Dorset to NZ. Personally I would save on sofa miles and feel virtuous, plus help local sofa economy when you arrive. My whiling away activities recently have included going to cash converters with a car load of electrical goods, coming out with 100 euros then realising that wouldn't even pay for the translation bills that we are running up.... I also am considering "getting fit for NZ" but haven"t yet made it to the pool...the most pleasing thing, and free, has been to give loads of garden plants away to friends, so, keep sane and smiling!! It will be spring or summer when we finally get there, and as everyone says here, worth the wait.

We need all the daft posts we can get on here with us being in the doldrums at the moment.

Another thought, if you want to look online - try NZ Yellow Pages , type in Furniture but leave the 'Where' box empty. That'll just bring up a load of anything to do with furniture but, if you pick out the obvious furniture shops and click on them, some of them might have websites.

This isn't intended to panic anyone, but very occasionally some shipments, somehow, become exposed to damp on the long voyage down to NZ and can become contaminated with mildew. If you aren't buying a new sofa in the UK, at least it's one thing less to worry about.

The best furniture we've seen here tends to be found in the smaller importers rather than in the chains. There are a couple really close to us here in Chch that are mom-and-pop and seem to get fresh stock quite often, which means that the stuff that hasn't moved quickly soon gets marked down. Don't get me wrong--they aren't bringing lime green and orange striped sofas--they have excellent taste and seem to be in the business of shopping in Indonesia as much as they are in the business of selling in Chch.

BTW, don't let the prices at Freedom Furniture throw you. They are the most expensive furniture store I've been to here in NZ.

I would also add the 'beware the size' observation. We went with a 2 seater, which just fits in the lounge with my recliner from the US. We added a couple of chairs to have more seating and some flexibility in the arrangement of the room.
