The legal drinking age is 18, but they ask for ID if you look under 25.

Just walk in there with your gingery, peppery, spicey constitution and flash 'em your ID and you'll be good to go

Another culture shock for me--seeing high school kids drinking beer out in public or seeing them buying it in the grocery store. Of course, now I know who drinks all that strawberry-flavored champagne and CD. :bleech:

I'm probably a bit late in replying but if you look on Accommodation, Attractions & Travel Guide for Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific - Jasons Travel Channel and use the filter, you should get a list of motels and hotels near the airport. Many of these will pick you up at the airport and in most cases you can have your car rental/campervan delivered to your motel/hotel. We've stayed in one motel near Auckland airport, and it wasn't as nice as the photo showed, and rather noisy. "Star" quality it was not, though the units were spacious.

Thanks Glenda - you're not to late at all!

We've booked a campervan (we went with NZ Adventure, thanks for the recommendation Cath), so next job is sorting the hotel now we know how many nights we need it for.

I would definitely have a photo-based driver's license, especially if you're planning to rent a car or campervan. Driving on a foreign license is unusual enough... It might work with a passport + paper-only license, but if it was me, I wouldn't risk the off-chance of a problem.
