Oh my goodness! I interpret your post as sounding relieved rather than nervously quaking in your boots.

I do hope the next few months will go by smoothly ... I am sure nobody could react as bad as my FIL did. (Incidentally, he has been officially warned he will be arrested if he continues to drive with a licence revoked due to his bad eyesight. His reaction? "Rubbish. They won't arrest an old man".)

Well Banjo.Jon, I guess she didn't say anything that you didn't already expect - could have been a lot worse, although what blackmail she might throw up over the next few weeks is anyone's guess

Try not to let it spoil your anticipation though - or worse, don't let her get you to change your mind through guilt! I hope she is adult enough to think and act reasonably now she knows, although I don't hold out much hope from what you've said about her.

Good luck with the aftermath

Glenda, 7 words for you - your father-in-law is a prat!

Well done, Lou. You came through. Feelings of relief now, eh Jon?

Just be sure of your goal and don't deviate from the path (of righteousness? ). There may be all sorts of obstacles put in your path from here on in, but just see them for what they are and skirt round them. The usual one is citing ill-health to encourage feelings of guilt, but it would be pretty much coincidence to find she's suddenly come up with a nasty complaint just when you're about to leave the country. If this is the case, have a word with her doctor and all will be revealed.

You never know, she may come good in the end and find some goodwill deep inside her. But there again......... It'll certainly go against the grain that she's lost control and can't pull your strings any more Are you the only child, Lou?

Good luck with the rest of your time in the UK. Hope you can move forward now that it's out in the open.

Thanks for your kind words ...

No .. I'm not an only child. The eldest of 2. My sister is 6 years younger. She is very much my mothers child, whereas I take after my Dad more. I was the one that persevered and went to Uni and got a good job, my sister went off the rails, dropped out of her A'levels, and then moans she can't get very well paid jobs. For some reason I seem to be resented for doing well for myself .. anyway - I digress ...

soooo ... told Mum .. went on and said she could come out for fantastic holidays and maybe even move out later ... to be told "she couldn't leave my sister".

ho hum ... watch this space for the next episode!

Ain't that always the way ? All the more reason for you to look out for yourself and do what you feel is right.

Tell her that that is entirely her own choice (and think yourselves very lucky she's made that choice )

At the moment Lucy's sister is my most favourite person in the whole world. If she has the power to keep her mother in the uk, thats the best news ever.

When he's safely in NZ with his ex-MIL behind him, his attention may then turn towards his new MIL.

Good going, Lou. It can be tough breaking "bad" news when the person you're telling can wield such emotional weaponry.

Yay for your sis helping to keep your mum in the UK. My grandmother keeps trying to talk me into moving near her, and I half fear she'll decide to move near me. Fortunately she takes forever to act, and isn't up to it anyway.

I still want to see a video of Jon singing his song!
