Wow, that sounds a lot more complicated than I thought it would be!

Got enough to think and worry about as it is already, I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it.

Hi Sleepy,

Following websites have some interesting information regarding all types of careers.

Welcome to Career Services - Career advice, what you can expect etc.

Labour Market Information on Employment and Work - The information on this site is a bit outdated. It shows an anticipated salary for 2001 (even though the site was updated in 2006).

All the best,
Shell

Got me really curious about McFod's case.

Am I clear on how this works ... I wouldn't be allowed to like buy a lease on a pub and work in that pub, I don't have any experience of even working in a pub, nevermind owning one, or owning any type of business ... or, I could buy a pub, but I just wouldn't be allowed to work there?

Or I could work there on a working Visa, but only untill that Visa ran out, then I wouldn't be allowed to apply for residency based on the fact that I owned a pub, or the lease on a pub? ... unless I got really lucky.

If you buy a business, your not allowed to pay yourself a salary, can you pay yourself "dividend" type amounts from any profits, and work there not on a salary?

Sorry, im confusing myself now with all this

Well, what's supposed to happen is that you start a business in NZ, having already run a similar successful business in your home country. However, Mark (Macfod) stunned us all by defying the very strict NZIS rulings and getting his Long Term Business Visa (LTBV). From this one would assume that the rules aren't cast in stone. He bought a cafe complete with kiwi staff despite never having run a business of his own before. One thing that NZIS is particularly keen on is that any new business venture you start up would employ kiwis so maybe it was that that swung it for him. Either that or grim determination. Whatever it was, we're very happy for him.

Perhaps you can pick his brains if you're keen to do something similar. He's off on holiday soon but maybe you can catch him before he goes. I do know that he owns and works in his cafe as does his wife, so that's one of your questions answered. If you wanted to start your own business or buy into an existing one, you'd need to go the LTBV route. If you managed to get PR some other way, you'd be free to buy into a business or start your own then.
