Yes, I made sure I took photos of the studs in our house before they put the board up ... hopefully, I will be able to find them again when hanging up pictures etc. There is a bit of a problem if a house has wooden floors (as our rental does) as the floor can vibrate with the kids stomping about; also if a door is slammed the walls wobble just slightly, and I have had a picture fall to the floor by the wind slamming doors. If you can find those studs MB, I would use perhaps two or three nails or hooks to hold that mirror up.

Has anyone found a way to overcome this problem?
Easy - tap the walls still it sounds solid and you will have hit some of the timber framing, screw into that without using a wall plug - same goes for hanging stuff from the ceiling

as for useless - try the bag that used to keep he cheep pergola that we threw away before we left.

The problem with the mirror and hanging it, is that it really needs screwing in several places to make it stable rather than, maybe, one screw at the top and one at the bottom. I'm not sure it might still be too heavy for just 2 screws.

When that mother-of-all-mirrors goes up, I want to make sure it stays up (and the wall as well, preferably ) It probably needs screws towards each side of it, too. I wonder how far apart the studs are because, if I could catch them as well, that might about do it.

If I'd only been aware of just how heavy it was when we first bought it. Could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble.

You may be able to figure out the spacing of studs based on when it was built. A seasoned contractor or the Kiwi version of the building department might be able to help you with that. Example: our house, built in 1931, has a stud (upright support) spacing of 24" on center. Newer homes have a different spacing, perhaps 18"? Interestingly, the ceiling joists are 16" on center.

If you find one stud, look for the second at the appropriate spacing. A trial & error method would be to drive in a thin nail, and find out if it hits wood behind the gip board. Extra holes can be filled with whatever Kiwis call spackle.
