Hotels to stay in the Auckland area..

As many of you will know, when we arrive we will be staying in Auckland (north shore)
what i want to know is where to stay for the first few days/week? (hotels etc)
Obviously it is better to go with a recommendation than staying somewhere "cold".
Also who did you book your flights with, and did you get good service???

We stayed at the Richomond Lodge between Auckland & Manukau, part of the Best Western Chain decent folks and reasonably quiet - about $15 in a taxi to Auckland central........ albeit miles away from North Shore!!

Try the Jasons website (travel/hotel guide) - www.jasons.com , I have only heard good reports about the accomodation listed there.

There are lots of opinions about airlines floating around the forum. For lodging, you could supplement Jason's with www.aatravel.co.nz. Many entries are the same as Jason's, but AA fills out the possibilities. I recommend looking for a Qualmark rating of 3 stars or more.

We stayed in a Quest hotel in downtown Auckland 4 years ago, and though it was nice, it was rather pricy ($150NZ).

Near the airport: The Grange Motel, Papatoetoe. Bernie and Pat are the most incredibly friendly and helpful people who will go out of their way to help you settle in to NZ. After one year they are still firm friends. They have won just about every award going for Motels in NZ. Best of all they charge a reasonable rate despite all this.

I stayed in 2 different motels not far from the Airport (Mangere) and to be honest, they were pretty poor for the price (about $79 per night). In the one place it sounded like vemin crawling in the wallspace... lovely.
