Default How to get a sensible shipping quote?

I have had several now, 1 from a visit, the others just via the net.

So far the cheapest has come in at ?4900!!!! This is for a 20" container. The highest was over ?5800. Now I think this is rediculously high, I had expected to pay around ?3500. We live not far from Leeds and only about 3 miles from the A1M access is not a problem to the property. The only difference from your average load is that ther are two motorbikes to be crated. However when I talked to shipping companies at York expo last year, they said that the only charged around ?50 to make a crate, so it should put the price up that much.

So has anyone from the Yorkshire region got any good news for me?

I'm looking too mate.

I'm north of the border about 12miles form the M74.
?3700 was my cheapest from the PSS website.

but from other posts on here I'm not sure that would really be the price once they are invited here to quote.
I spoke to a company round the corner and they ,over the phone, said roughly 4 grand..
I reckon it's going to be nearer to the 4 grand than the 3 and a half i was hoping for.

if i find anymore worth shouting about , i'll let you know..

If you can get 4K from Scotland, how the heck can I not get less that that for Leeds?
Remember if have heard already, do not to take out their own insurance, use Leighton Percival, it is a lot cheaper.

Moggy, i got a quote from PSS, who actually came round and got two quotes one for a shared and one for a 20ft. There was only a few hundred pounds difference and have opted for the 20ft, which is around ?3100.
So it was a bit cheaper than i had envisaged (about 5K)....

I guess you are a lot further south and rather close to a port though which would explain why it was pretty cheap.

I have contacted Bishops move as they have a depot about 3 miles away and they also offer the option of packing yourself which migh save some money that way. I wouldn't mind packing stuff myself, we are not taking much breakable stuff anyway.

Heres a run down of our quotes so far, a good mix of high profile & local.

Criiteria as follows. 20ft single use, shipped from Carlisle to Nelson (NZ), full packing & un packing service. Nothing out of the ordinary on inventory.

Anglo Pacific - £4450
Baxters £3,700 ( i think). Local Branch great so far, they surveyed & then liased with Head office / deep sea specialist.
PSS £3,700 (i think) - quite poor service so far, we were "too far north" to send a surveyor.....well, they are too far south for me to bother with then!
Steeles of Barrow £3,950. Good local firm, but nothing over & above Baxters.

Still waiting for Whites of Lancaster. They moved my brother (well his possessions anyway), though that was a couple of years ago.

I know a haulier who runs a fleet of 30 artics & he recons that the going rate for haulage is abour 43p a mile for a long run, so that will give people a fair indication of the haulage to port. I think most seem to quote Ramsgate, which is bloody great for us northerners.

Moggy, check out how clean your bikes will need to be. Anglo Pacific said if I took my MG Midget then if I got it steam cleaned that would be enough to get it though MAF in NZ without a re-cleaning charge (as long as I had the receipt for the cleaning). Mind you, if they find out that we live accross the road from a farm that had foot & mouth the whole familiy may need sterilised!! I would have thought you would get keener quotes that what you have got Moggy especially being in the Leeds area.

The guy from Anglo Pacific told me that PSS sub-contract their packing for northern England removals to a firm in yorkshire....Driffield rings a bell but dont quote me. If you can find out who it is you can maybe go straight to them and cut out the middle man.

Keep this thread rolling.......its well useful!!

Me too, I don't think I have found anyone else no matter where they are being quoted so high by so many different firms

Hi moggy,

we live in york and have had loads of quotes (average ?4000). PSS were the cheapest at 3500 but very shoddy service and I would not recommend them .

We also had quotes from Robinsons (about 4000), crown (5000) and allied pickfords (we knocked them down from 5000 to 3900).

We had loads more too but in the end chose Britannia (3900) who have a branch based in York. We are also shipping a motorbike. Found them to be very helpful so far and even though we have had to delay at the last minute by a week due to not exchanging contracts on our house they are still bending over backwards to help. We are now due to be moved on Feb 9th :smiley4:

Good luck with it all

My advice would be to be cheeky and try to knock their price down, most should come down to 4000.

I notice no one has tried Bargate, they offer good quotes and the service we had was great.

Maybe worth a try?

I've never heard of them, do you have any contact info?

I have since had a quote in from a self packing company for ?2700, but I would need to hire a tail gate lift vehicle for half a day in order to get the bikes into the container.

the quote also included 1 months free storage in NZ
