Default Paying rates on an empty house??

Does anyone know if you still have to pay full rates if your house is empty? Ours has been empty since we left for the UK in September but we have kept up full rates payment. I wondered if were eligble for a reduction or even to not pay them at all.

I'm not going to be any help with this, but you've posed an interesting question as we have a house in NZ that has been empty for nearly a year and I'm sure Taffy said he's been paying the rates on it. Trust him to have gone on holiday just when I need to check with him . Still, all being well I should see him in person in 3 weeks .

    Hi Nicky,

I don't think you get a discount for houses not being lived in - only mention of rebates is if you are on a low income,

You're probably best off calling the council .. here's all I found on their website about discounts:
    Waimakariri District Council
