Default Where to live HELP :)

Hi, so my finace and I are thinking about moving to NZ. I have just started researching how to do that, places to live, etc. We will be visiting NZ next fall and visiting potential cities/towns.

    Where should we live??

We want to live on the South Island, we want to be near the water and close to skiing (ideally within an hour - two hours drive of skiing). We love skiing, hiking and biking. We also want to live in a smaller town/city. We also need to be able to find jobs. I am a legal assistant in Canada - so that should be able to transfer pretty easily to a job as a receptionist/admin assistant somewhere right? My fiance is a draftsman for a custom cut limestone company. He is doing architechtual drafting work with autocad, etc. but is trained in mechanical drafting/technologist field.

It rather depends on how small a town is ok ;)
If you want a city within two hours of a commercial ski field, then Christchurch is it. If you don't mind a couple more hours of travel, and a wider choice of ski fields, Dunedin is added to your list.
If you are interested in smaller fields as well, (less groomed, less lifts, less expensive, less crowded) three are plenty of what are called club fields.
For hiking and biking there are great spots no matter where you are.

If you don't mind a smaller city of less than 100 000 or a town then you have a wide choice. It may be more dictated by where you can get work.

I would agree with this because so many people have dreams about where they would like to settle but can't necessarily get work there. Finding a suitable job is all-important and will, in the end, determine where you can live. Once you have settled down in NZ and things are moving along OK, you can always look around for a new job in another area you find more appealing. Hopefully, it would be easier to find another job then because you will have some NZ work experience under your belt.

If you want small and limestone you could look at Oamaru - 1 hour north of Dunedin - population about 13,000 on the coast, 1 hour from the mountains and lakes and famous for its limestone and penguins!

We love penguins! I'm sold LOL

Actually, we were looking at Oamaru, it could be a definite possibility.

I'd like to have a list of where we'd ideally like to live first and start looking for jobs there, see if anything pans out, then if nothing does, we'd move to looking in a bigger city to get us over there initially. We are from a town of about 45,000 right now. The main thing is eventually being able to buy a house in the future with some land and not have super close neighbours. I don't want to be squished on a tiny city lot.

I would say, unless you have jobs arranged before you get here, then on the South Island, chch is your only bet, however yuou can easily live in a very small town and still be in commuting distance of chch.
We live pretty well in the middle of nowhere and still only commute about 35 mins. When I say middle of nowhere, the next house on this road is 20km, the nearest houes (out of view also ) is a couple of km

The nearest coastal cities to main skifields in the SI would be:

Timaru pop 20k (about an hour and a half to Mt Hutt)
Invercargill pop 50k (2 hours to The Remarkables, bit more to Coronet Peak)
Christchurch pop 380k (about an hour to Porters which is a small skifield, and 2 to Mt Hutt)

Nowhere else is really less than 3 hours from a main field. If you expand your criteria to small towns, throw in Ashburton. If you expand it to small skifields, throw in Nelson and maybe Blenheim though not sure how far the latter is.

^ if that's Dunedin you're talking about (you overstate the population by 10-20k hehe) it's still 3+ hours from the skifields though
