    Default Christchurch Suburbs

What are the best suburbs to live in, in CHCH?
What are the most expensive ones?
I don't want to end up in a bad area!

There aren't really any bad areas ... but there are a few "poorer" areas. Wainoni and Linwood spring to mind, but no real no-go areas.

Expensive areas: Fendalton, Cashmere Hills, Mount Pleasant .....

We did all the research before we moved here, but the reality is that you have to come and see for yourself. What ticks one persons box, is another persons "no".

Do you have a job yet? That might have a big bearing on where you end up living, if, like me you don't want a huge commute.

All the best, and dont' forget to give us a holler when you arrive in CHCH as always up for meeting new folk

There are some areas in Christchurch that some people regard as bad..I live in one! You only need to walk 1 or 2 blocks in each direction from here to be in a more expensive area. We have been here some years and have occasionally had police cars outside houses down the road, and the odd loud party, but the people are helpful and friendly (bringing back my escape artist dog, feeding my cat while I am away and lending me a ladder etc). Some good areas I have lived in had "nice" people who were hard to be around - they complained when we had the wrong type of front fence!
I think the better you get to know your neighbours, the better the area, and the more mixed an area, the less of an outsider anyone new will be. That is what makes me comfortable, but everyone has different expectations.

Some people, especially female, wouldn't walk around the central city in the small hours of the morning on their own, but apart from that, there are not any "no go" areas.

Christchurch is a lovely city to live in, and very family focused, but as a female I wouldn't walk around on my own at night and best to err on the side of safety in any city! The central city has a good night life especially around Sol square - check out Home with lots of live music appealing to different tastes!

Aranui is about the only really bad area, lot of state housing and gang houses.
Put it this way, when picking up an attempted suicide (in the ambulance) the guy neighbours were stood outside, not helping, drinking cans of Woodstock.
