Dolphins

Hi everyone

Its exactly 2weeks and 5days until we fly out to NZ. We are there for 3 weeks to explore and get a feel for the different areas. Whilst our main objective is to explore and decide on our future there, we want to make it a holiday for the children.
My eldest daughter who is 10, is desperate to see dolphins in the wild and maybe even have the chance to swim with them.
Can anyone help with where the best area is to spot them etc

You haven't told us if you are visiting the North or South Island.

If the latter, go on a wildlife cruise from Lyttleton or Akaroa (Nr Christchurch) with BlackCat ... guaranteed to see Hector Dolphins. They also arrange trips to swim with them too ... New Zealand Scenic Cruises Christchurch Attractions New Zealand Dolphin Cruises & Tours

Hi - we went swiiming with the Hector's dolphins at Akaroa with Black Cat two weeks ago - fantastic time and my 10 year old didn't stop smiling for days. I would recommend them highly.

North Island, I think one of the best places in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty not far from Tauranga

Thanks for all the help and advice.

We are staying in the North Island for 2 weeks, around Bay of Plenty and then wellington area. The last week will be in the south Island although not too sure where we are staying yet, cutting it a bit fine I think.

If you take the ferry from NI to SI, you could stay in Picton for a day and take a wildlife cruise in the Queen Charlotte Sound. We saw dusky dolphins and little blue penguins out on the water.
