Default New Plymouth / Taranaki

Hi all!

Our EOI was selected in the last draw, and now we're waiting for the ITA...
Finally we can now believe that we are actually going - leaving from Helsinki, Finland to move to New Plymouth.

My wife has a job there in the hospital and I will be stay-at-home-dad until I find work (luckily not in a hurry).
We're all excited, but we have no idea of what we're getting into, especially in regards to New Plymouth.
We'd love to hear your comments about the city and region!

Also, I'm going to be a stay-at-home-dad. Any experiences on how well that goes in NZ? I'm a bit concerned about finding a social circle if I'm not working, especially since NP is not the biggest city. Anybody has stories to share?

Cheers,

Paul+Sanni

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We looked at New Plymouth as a place to live and it quite appealed to us however we decided against it and came to Welli instead for OH work options.

Alison on here is in New Plymouth and enjoing it- she doesn't seem to pop in so much now but maybe you could PM her.

Beth

Hi Papu

Sorry I dont get around to looking online so much nowadays, but yes we moved here to New Plymouth last July and have to say are really happy here! No it's not the biggest town in the world, but it is a really nice one and a very friendly place, I am still amazed at how quickly we felt at home here. Friendly people, good schools, beautiful scenery all around, lots to do in summer and winter for a smaller place, weather wise was a great summer, very hot and sunny throughout, infact Taranaki got declared a drought area in the end, not so good for those pooir farmers though, winter on the way, we have snow on the mountain now which is a good sign hehe. House prices not to bad I dont think.

As for being a stay at home dad you will be fine, I've seena few around at school and don't think anyone has an issue, at the school my son goes to the mums took me under there wing straight away and looked after me, inviting us round for dinner/drinks etc, infact 2 of those mums are now my best friends and are just amazing, we have had lots of bad luck lately with things going wrong, car, in the house etc and they have been there for us constantly to help out.

If you have any specific questions just post away here or send me a PM, I will try and check back a bit more often :)

Ali

Looking back at New Plymouth Port and Sugar Loaf Marine Reserve (big seal colony there which is gorgeous) from Oakura Beach during last winter.
