Question Strange circles around Christchurch

When looking on google earth at the Christchurch area we have noticed there are a huge number of oval shaped 'racing' tracks. Can anyone shed any light on these? Are Kiwi's obsessed with racing cars or is there some other more sinister use? We have seen properties near these tracks and the write up says 'quiet' is this true?

Okay, so when I first read this post I was like ... uh, there's Addington Raceway and Riccarton Park, but what is this 'large number' thing?

So then I got on Google Earth and started looking ... OMG! You're right! There are dozens upon dozens of these ovals!

I have no idea what they are. I thought at first they had something to do with farming, but looking at some other farming areas I don't see them, so I'm puzzled.

Are they trotting circuits for horses? There seem to be a fair ammount of horses and big stables around? Then they would be quiet apart from gentle cantering noises! Where are you looking at in ChCh,?

They could be dirt bike/speedway type tracks on peoples farms made up for their kids. There's quite a few of those around the place.

Burgundy has hit the nail on the head. They're trotting circles. I've seen a couple that are made of cinder or ash, but most of 'em are just big grassy ovals. There are loads of them, but I've only seen the odd horse and cart trotting round a couple. I thought they were relicsof yesteryear, but trotting is huge round here, so a lot of them do get used.

And before the equestrians out there abuse my terminology, a horse is a horse, a cart is a trailer with two wheels and trotting is another word for fast walking!

I didn't realise Kiwi's were so into trotting. Is this something that is particular to Canterbury or is it all over NZ?

I think it's an Australasian thing. I prefer the jumps myself. Nothing like Aintree on Grand National Day. Although of course I would make the fences smaller so none of the horses get hurt. And Dawn, that's the TRUTH!
