You are absolutely right - there are often dogs running around. At our rental, the next door dog considered our garden her territory and would bark at us whenever we went up our own driveway, the guy down the road has dogs which run up and down the street and people's gardens during 'exercise time' (and probably were the ones that left paw prints in my nearly dry concrete patio), and my kids have been 'barked' off their bikes now and again around the town.

BTW I am not anti-dog (absolutely adored our own past pet dogs) but other people's dogs are a worry at times.

I know they are supposed to be in a fully-fenced property as owners whose dogs get out and injure people on the street are arrested.

Do hope Dawn and co find somewhere soon.

Keeping dogs fully fenced in may well be a council bylaw, and not be country wide. All I could find on the subject was an application for a two or more dog license, which clearly states that the property must be fully fenced to keep the dog on the property at all times, or if not fully fenced, a suitable section of ground fenced in to keep the dog in. It even says if the property is fully fenced, a suitable dog free area must be provided for official visitors!

This was Christchurch City Council, here's the form: http://www.ccc.govt.nz/Animals/forms...enceAppFrm.pdf

I haven't been able to pin down about the dog license in a way that I can quote to you, but I suspect licenses are required in NZ. Most information seems to hark back to individual councils and bye laws so perhaps you'd need to know which area you intend heading for.

Meanwhile, whilst digging around, I found this NZ doggy site which might possibly be of interest to some of you pooch owners. If you go to General Pet Travel at the top and click on the links underneath, it gives suggestions for dog-friendly hotels, motels, kennels and campsites.

Edited to add, you might find something useful in The Dog Control Act 1996 .

Changes to the 1996 Dog Control Act .

Have looked into this a bit today. Each council has slightly different rules & fees, but main points seem to be:-

- All puppies must be registered from 3 months of age.
- All dogs to be microchipped/tattooed.
- Fines of approximately $300 if you don?t register.
- Discounts available. Each council has different criteria for discounts available, eg. fully fenced section, speyed/neutered animal.

I?ve listed links to a few of the councils' dog licence pages here but if yours isn?t here, just Google ?dog licence? and the name of the council area you are in/going to.

Auckland City Council - Dogs
Christchurch City Council - Dog Registration - Animals & Pets - Christchurch City Council
Waikatere City Council - Dog Registration
Wellington City Council - Dogs - Registration - Introduction - Wellington - New Zealand
Hamilton City Council - Hamilton City Council & Hamilton, New Zealand - City Services

Who'd have thought our beloved pooch would cause so much grief eh?

The more we look into it, the fewer the options there seem to be.

WIllow is a 7 month Golden Retriever ... the kids love her so leaving her here is not an option. At this rate we might end up living in our camper van which we plan to buy, or else just buy any old house off the net!!

Lou

ETA. Willow is now staying in the UK .. just caught her eating my shoe in the garden!

Lou, I know it's not a long term answer but we'll have Willow for you when you get here if you like. It might help a little whilst you get yourself sorted. Our 2 are big soft gits and if you're thinking of heading for Hamilton you can come and see her whenever you like.

Our friend has had our two for the last month or so and to be honest it's just been a weight off of our minds. We've had so much to think about and sort out whilst we've been here that not having to think about them has been a great help.

Seriously, we'd be happy to help you out. Just give us a shout.

Thanks Dawn ..... we might well take you up on your kind offer. It's an absolute nightmare isn't it? As if the Visas, hose selling, job hunting wasn't enough?

BTW, how much did it cost to ship your dogs over? and what breed are they?

Ta,

Lou

another Willow one of our dogs is called Willow as well - there's no way in the world my OH would even contemplate emigrating if he couldn't take the dogs with him - if we get it all sorted we will be re-homing our two cats as they are quite old & I don't think they'd stand the stress of moving very well but I think the OH is more gutted after finding out he won't be able to have a Koi pond in NZ if we emigrate & will have to make do with fancy goldfish instead silly man
