Mt Maunganui to be transferred to iwi

Tauranga's iconic Mt Maunganui (Mauao) is soon to be transferred from the crown to local Maori.

A deal involving three iwi was likely to be signed within six weeks, the Bay of Plenty Times reported today.

Part of the agreement will be that local Maori work with Tauranga City Council to jointly manage the mountain.

But Maori leaders have told the council that at some stage they might want to take over complete responsibility for managing Mauao.
