Hi Amy,

Welcome to Wild Welly! :) Man those winds have been crazy lately! And just when we think the summer has started (yesterday avo was gorgeous!), bam! back come the winds today - fantastic! Ah well, surely it has to stop soon :D

When we first got here, we couldn't find a furnished rental so ended ip renting a 2 bed townhouse in Johnsonville (same reasons as above - close ish to town but a lot cheaper rent!) and we just picked up some second-had stuff from the local trade and exchange paper - got some sofas, a queen bed and fridge - all the essentials! We had to hire a van for the day to pick it all up, but it got us through the first few months (and we've still got the sofas and fridge now after 2 years!) We didn't know about trademe when we first got here, so prob could have found better bargains there, but hey - you live and learn :)

If you dont want to buy second-hand stuff for now, check out DTR - they rent out electrical goods so you could rent all your TV/Fridge/Washing machine etc from there if you wanted to. They even rent beds/sofas/dining futniture too!

http://www.dtr.co.nz

Always an option!

Hi Guys,

Internet at last. Wifi (Cafenet) links are pants in the CBD for info....

We've now moved into a nice small 'granny flat' in Kelburn. Kelburn is a lovely wee village and I think we are going to be happy here for the time being. Something nice about getting the cable car to work in the morning to work.

Kelburn is about 15 mins buy bus and 4 mins by cable car. Its close enough to be in the centre of things but far enough out of town so you dont feel like youre in a big city. I'd recommend Kelburn to anyone.

Jodie - thanks for all your advice. We finally got a Fully Furnished place by placing an ad on Gumtree website and someone called us! Got it for a bargain too but we wont be telling the landlords that.

Only problem you notice in Wellie is that prices for food etc are that few dollars more than the smaller towns and cities but I suppose its all relative?

Wellie is certainly windy but has this amazing feel to it. We still feel that Wellie is the best city in NZ. So much going on and to do and you're so close to everything.

Work wise, things are going great. I went for four jobs, got an interview with all of them and in the same day I got offered all the jobs! Not what I expected at all. I'm now working with a big property development company called Land Equity and thoroughly loving it. Finally getting a wage which is a nice feel.

Hope I've not missed too much and I promise to try and be online more now that we have the net at home again. It was so hard using Wifi hotspots over the last few weeks.

Oh I so remember those days back in June when we were staying in Boulcott Street in the CBD - we had to lean out of the balcony doors in order to get connected to cafenet!! - very refreshing when its 5 degrees and raining!! ?The things we do to stay connected eh?? ?Great to hear that you are settling in to Wellington life, and congrats on the job front.

I could see us living in Kelburn, and me strolling to work at the Botanical Gardens (getting paid - to garden? Heaven!). I'm glad you're liking it up there, LilAmy.

A word of warning about Kelburn. Watch your car!!

We park in Residents Parking areas in Kelburn where all the residents park and woke up this morning to find our car had been broken in to! the little b*ggers got off with Stus new sunnies and wrecked our dashboard trying to get our car stereo..ha to them as they couldnt but still a lot of damage done.

Apparantly there are a few breakins in cars in the area as all the houses are raised quite a bit from the road so no one actually looks onto the road as such so if you are planning to move here find a wee side street and park infront of one of the lower level houses. I suppose that goes for anywhere where the houses dont look directly onto the streets.

Pretty annoyed about it but what can we do eh? The Police are pretty pants as well, we've been told not to touch the car apart from boarding the windows up as they may want to take finger prints. Well it's now 12 hours later and still no word from them. We're going to wait till Sat morning then get it into a garage to get repaired.

Kelburn is a safe area with regards to house breakins but cos of the way the houses lie its easy to break into cars here.

Dont want to damped anyones thoughts about Kelburn car thefts happen all over the world. Just pretty annoyed and for some reason I didnt expect something like that to happen in NZ. Considering most people dont even lock their house doors here!

What a shame Lil Amy! We had our car broken into here a few months back. It was on the front drive but no other houses around, it made me feel really nervous about everything. Until then we'd always been pretty lax with locking things and putting stuff away, it was quiet where we lived and we preferred to trust people but not anymore!

Luckily they didn't get away with too much.

Pleased to hear that everything else is good for you though and that you've become so attached to Welli :D

Sorry to hear about your car, Amy. It's not just the stuff they take, it's the complete mess they make of your car. Hope you're able to get it fixed soon. Would be good if the police could catch the blighters and string them up by their unmentionables but, by the sound of it, they weren't up to much either.
