    Default Happy birthday, Christchurch

    Christchurch turns 150
    31 July 2006

It's official: Christchurch is 150 years old today.

Christchurch became New Zealand's first city when Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent, or Royal Charter, on July 31, 1856, enabling Christchurch to be the base for a bishop.

A 150th birthday bash was held in Cathedral Square on Saturday to celebrate the occasion, marked by a 150m, 2.6 tonne birthday carrot cake which was iced on the spot and then given away to party-goers.

Mayor Garry Moore said the celebrations had been 'outstanding' with tens of thousands of people visiting the Square during the day. Anyone who thought Christchurch was not a multi-cultural city should have been there, he said.

People of all cultures and faiths were in the Square celebrating their city, indicating its true nature, he said. Moore said the Christchurch City Council team which put the event together did an outstanding job, as had the cake-making team.

The celebrations included the central-city tram, where party-goers had the chance to be one of 150 to cram themselves inside in the 'Tram-Jam'. They also wore fancy dress representing their favourite things about Christchurch, with the chance to win free trips to Australia.

Entertainment included the Garden City Big Band, funky jazz by Oval Office, The Wobbles for the youngsters, a kapa haka cultural group, plus the Wizard, magicians, jugglers, stilt-walkers, clowns, face-painting and punting trips on the Avon. Some of the city's landmarks were wrapped in parochial colours of red and black. Ribbons in Canterbury colours dangled from trees and lamp-posts.

On Christmas Day, 1856, Henry John Chitty Harper was enthroned as the first Bishop of Christchurch, so it is also the 150th anniversary of the Anglican Diocese. A service was held yesterday to mark both anniversaries at Christ Church Cathedral, with guest preacher the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, Dr Christopher Lewis.
