Default Auckland/Wellington/Other Ideas?

Hi, I have been planning on initially settling in Auckland as it appears I can get good work there, hopefully.

However, I was wondering what about Wellington or other parts of North Island?

I work as an Office Manager/Exec PA

Any ideas/suggestions please

I don?t know whether it would be wise to first suss out where you can actually get a job rather than decide you want to settle in either Auckland or Wellington. If you?re confident that you could get a decent job in Auckland you could always go for that for the time being. Then, later on, if you aren?t totally happy where you are or are looking for a change, you could visit Wellington or wherever else takes your fancy and see how you feel about the place. You don?t necessarily have to be tied to one city.

If getting a job is of utmost importance, I?d tend to concentrate on that for the time being and think about moving around NI later on when you?ve had a chance to experience the country and what it has to offer. Once you?ve found a job you?ll then have the luxury of having the time to properly research other jobs and other areas because, at least, you?ll be earning.

The three largest cities in the North Island are Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington. I would have thought you would be safe in finding vacancies in all these cities, though of course more likely in Auckland. Other N.I. cities are more like large towns rather than cities, and work more difficult to find.

Hi Katie,

I am looking for PA/Admin work as well when I go out to NZ and I have found that where ever you look for jobs be it Permy or temp work it's pretty easy to get into that line of work.

I'm going out with a WHV but can only get temp work when I go out until I get a permy visa of some sort so I'm just going to temp around at the mo and take it from there, means we can get an idea of where we may eventually want to settle and just move around both islands.

I dont know if your situation would be the same and you would be able to do this as well but it would give you a feel of different places before you finally decide to settle down?

Napier and Hastings combined have a population of about 112000 so not too bad either if your thinking of populations centres being an indicator of jobs.

You have to be careful with NZ as population doesnt necassarily mean jobs. Hamilton has 125,000 people and plenty of jobs, but Tauranga with a population of around 100,000 has very few jobs. Some of these places have more population than industry due to being holiday/scenic/retirement spots. I think Aucks, Ham, Welly and ChCh are the only places where there is a good work/population balance.

Touring around is the only way to go if you don't know where you'd like to settle already.

yeah i should have said, that doesn't take into account retirees or unemployed which is higher in some places. Also if you work in a specialised field then it may be that you have to look for places where head offices would be. For example, I work in Marketing so whilst there may be quite a few businesses in some of the bigger areas in NZ, all the head offices for those companies are likely to be in Aucks, Christchurch or Welly. (Taffy flatters himself with Hamilton I'm sure hehe). ;) I dunno give em a rugby match and the hottest city in a year and they think they're the centre of the universe [smiley=icon_mrgreen.gif]

Avoid Masterton - I have heard that a mad Scotsman has been terrorising the locals in his Suzuki 4wd. Look out Natty's about..............
