Auckland is the biggest city - and the highest prices. I don't like the city, so I'll be biased and say don't go there ;-) (South Auckland is as close a ghetto [trust me, it's a lot better then a ghetto though] as you'll get in NZ, and the rents are cheap, not recommended though)

Lower Hutt is outside of Wellington and has pretty decent rates

And Christchurch is pretty affordable as well.

You can find demographic info here: https://www.qv.co.nz/onlinereports/p...ghbourhood.htm

I don't think it has rental prices though. But there's a flat finder thing on Trademe.co.nz where you can find going prices in the areas your looking.

Hi suz,

It all depends on where you think you will be working. If it is the CBD then expect either commuting or expensive rentals. Generally, the CBD, east Auckland and just across the bridge (North Shore) are the most expensive areas. If you can work outside the CBD, I would say areas to look at are some areas of west Auckland and north Auckland/Hibiscus Coast.

Of course, everyone is different and opinions different. [smiley=icon_confused.gif] [smiley=icon_rolleyes.gif]

If you?d like to compare prices of what?s available, try these. Some of these agents, you may find, are interlinked. There may well be cheapish options available, but what state they?d be in, I wouldn?t venture to say. At least these will give you some idea of what?s currently available and in which areas. It would narrow it down if you could select an area and then ask on the forum if anyone has any personal experience of that place. I would imagine, the nearer you want to be to the cities, the more expensive it gets. You really need to select a location where there is a good chance of employment in your particular field.

http://www.bayleys.co.nz/search/prop...13&go2.y=7 tweak this a bit to get the price and location you want. Starts off expensive, then drops down.
