Renting Info

Hi,

Has anyone got info on what to expect when renting? I have never rented here in the UK, but I'm sure there will be some differences in NZ.

* How much of a bond is normal....3 months rent?
* Is it common to rent for less than 6 months....are 3 month contract available?
* Do you have to pay rates if your renting?
* Does the rental normally include utilities....or are these costs extra?

For houses: rents are quoted generally by the week and generally do not include utilities.
In my experience the Landlord checks you out pretty thoroughly...often even to personal references. The Bond is negotiable..but most want 1st months rent in advance.
You can get a sense of rents from the nz herald and realenz.
What is a little scary in the area Im watching, is the sheer lack of houses for rent.

From our experience here in Welly, most places want 2 weeks rent upfront, plus 2 week's bond. If you rent from an agent they seem to want at least a 6 month contract, but if you go through the local paper and rent privately, they seem to do it on a 2 week basis - well - that's what our situation is anyway. IE - we can give 2 weeks notice at any time if we want to move out.

Better than the UK!!! Also, avoid the agents if you can cos they charge a 2 weeks rent admin fee too.
