house buying for non residents

is anyone able to tell me whether there are any rules governing whether you can buy property or not depending on the visa you are on.

I intend entering NZ on a working visa and wondered if that would mean i wouldn't be able to buy a house until I had residency status?

also, does anyone have any info on eligibility for mortgages..?

We moved here 6 months ago, got a mortgage with no problems, we are on a 3 year work Visa (for now), the bank just needed a copy of my husbands work contract.
