    Default Bike/jogging paths?

Since I have not been to NZ yet and cannot seem to find any information on this does anyone know if there are bike paths on either island? Is cycling popular? Running? Do they have any road races for runners? 5k, 10k, half or full marathon?

Ah, this is one for Kokopeli from the South Island, when he's next on here. He seems to do it all and is our resident sports' god. .

In Kokos absense .... I can try?

Here in the South Island, cycling and running is hugely popular. We often see lots of road cyclist out at the weekend - and there are some fab mountain biking tracks. For the leisurely ride, there is Macleans Forest, Bottle Lake Forest (there are loads more) which have dedicated cycle tracks.

For the fitter peeps, there are tracks over the Port Hills!

Running is pretty much the same ... loads of runners, lots of events organised. Along the beach is a fab run .. and can be as long as you like ... there just isn't the bridleways and public footpaths that we are used to - but there are alternatives.

BTW - This is just in and around CHCH .. am sure there is a similar story in most other areas.

Yep, up here in Hamilton tis the same. We live near Cambridge, a lot of world class cyclists and rowers hale from Cambridge. There are always loads and loads of cyclists out on the roads, it's very flat around here. Running clubs are ten a penny with many many events organised throughout the year. I think you'll find it's the same all over NZ.

Just as an aside. I used to run a lot before I came to NZ - about 10k 4 times a week. We lived in rural Nottinghamshire and I would go out my back gate up into the woods and just run to my hearts content. When we came here, I found no woods to run in and tried it out on our rural roads. I found the cambre of the roads to be so steep here that it hurt my hips, knees and ankles to run. I didn't really enjoy the road either as it didn't quite provide the holistic experience of the forest So no more running for me. Not that I need to run to stay fit as I do so many other things, it was just that I did enjoy it.

Everywhere's different and wherever you end up you'll find what's best for you there. The key is to realise that it WILL be different in NZ but that you'll take the differences on

Sorry Lou. Forgot you and Dawn are also forum superfit superstars. Probably put it far to the back of my mind because I'm not and never will be. *hangs head in shame*

Don't fret too much, MB. I also thought of Koko, considering he's such an Iron Man outdoor polyathlete kinda guy. I figured Dawn danced all day, and Lou yoga'd till the cows came home.

Although one might not be able to step out the door and onto a track, there are lots of domains in towns and reserves & the like all over. If I lived in Chch, I'd be tramping all over the Port Hills. A while ago, we met a tramping club from Whangarei - no one under 60 or so, and all fit and jolly. They took weekly group tramps around home, then went off for two weeks a year (or so) to tramp in other parts of the country.

This is great! Particularly since there are running clubs. While I am not the club type person I do need to be able to join some group so as to develop friendships in a new place. And since I love to run...

I love to run just about anywhere with hills or not. I don't typically do trail runs as I am worried about injuring myself. This is great news!

Hey - no worries MB. I sure aint anywhere near as fit as either Koko or Dawns - although give it a few car-less weeks and who knows!

Selchie: Fancy popping a few scoops of ice-cream in a bowl for me too?
