Default House Phone Line a Must?

We've rented a house in Wellington Central area and just starting to furnish it. I notice that website like Trademe required a house phone number to authenticate member and Broadband coy like XNet require the number to check for availability. Hence is the house phone line a must-have? We're thinking to just stick to our mobile line and do away with the fix line.
    Any advice? Thanks

There is a contact page on Trademe. I sent off saying I only had my mobile and a work number and they emailed back asking when would be a convenient time for them to phone me.

They called and then opened my Trademe account and were very friendly about it.

I dont think a landline is a necessity.

    Default House phone or Mobile

There is no real necessity for the hard line phone. I know several people in the States that had done away with hardline phones, the reality in NZ is that mobile service is very, very expencive. So, the reality is that you will probably want to have a hardline phone. The "plans" are measured in tens of minutes, not hundreds. A typical plan in the States, $50 would get you 500 min or so. In NZ, that $50 plan will get you about 60 min. Cell service, electricity, food and clothing are all expencive. Internet, broadband are on the slow side, too.

We decided to do away with the house phone and just get a pre-paid mobile line for each of us. For calling (local or oversea) at home, we use skype credit which is much more affordable. Just that pple can't call us on our skype unless we subscribe to a skype number.
We use vodafone prepaid and choose the bestmate (unlimited txt and call) add-on at $6/mth to call btw spouse.
